Welcome To MBS PE

Malletts Bay School

Physical Education

Welcome Letter

Dear MBS Osprey Caregivers,

First, I would like to say welcome to Malletts Bay School. My name is Elizabeth Eastman. I will be your child’s physical education teacher. I am super excited to have your child in my class this year! In this letter you will find updates about mask expectations, outdoor location and duration, appropriate apparel and volunteer update.

As you know masks are a requirement when inside the school building. This will also apply to PE classes when held in the gym. Students will be given mask breaks which means they will have the opportunity to take off their masks if they choose to. Students needing a mask break will simply need to let me know and will be mask free in a designated area. A water break is another great time for a mask break. Please talk with your child about what their comfort level might be. Feel free to email me (Elizabeth.eastman@colchestersd.org) if your child has any issues with masks during PE. I want all my students to feel comfortable and safe during my class.

To help reduce the spread of germs we will be requiring students to wash their hands before and after PE class. When students arrive hand sanitizer will be available for them to use. I too will be washing my hands and cleaning equipment in between classes. I will also be rotating equipment bags to give them time to dry after cleaning and to help reduce the amount of shared equipment between students.

Your child will be primarily participating in PE outside this year. During outdoor PE classes students may choose to remove their mask. We have been fortunate this year to have a tent setup for shade and rain protection. Knowing that we will be outside for most of the year I am asking that your child come prepared for the weather. Being prepared means having an extra pair of socks, a second set of sneakers (if you can), extra shorts or pants in case they get wet, water bottle and coats for the cooler temperatures. Please make sure to write your child’s name on any outdoor apparel and water bottle.

I am so excited to say that your child will be having PE twice a week. On my blog you will be able to see what days of the week your child will have PE. Click on the tab that says class schedule. My blog is one of the places where I will be posting pictures and videos of students participating in PE. My Instagram account ( pe_shark) is another place where you will see the fun we are having.

Again, if you have any questions, comments or suggestions feel free to email me at Elizabeth.Eastman@colchestersd.org. I am here for you and your child.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth Eastman

Ski and Board Sale Canceled this year

Due to COVID-19 the PE teachers at MBS, CMS and CHS have decided to cancel this Years Annual Ski and Board sale. If we decide to continue with this tradition next year we will let you all know. Thank you to everyone who has supported us throughout the years.

Thank you to our vendors and VOLUNTEERS!!!

Welcome Ospreys

 Hi everyone,

Welcome back to school. Some of you don't know me I am Mrs.Eastman. I am one of the PE teachers at MBS. I have been teaching at MBS for 11 years. So much has changed since last year but one thing that I want to make sure doesn't change is that PE stays FUN. Over summer I spent time modifying our favorite games to be physically distanced (6 feet apart) activities.

Our UA schedule is on a rotation which means that I will see each one of my classes every other week. Sometimes I will see you two weeks in a row. If you would the specific dates of when your student will have PE please feel free to email me and I can send you the dates.

Each time I see you in person there will also be a hybrid or remote lesson in our Google classroom. Your teacher should have helped you join my google classroom by the end of the week. Most of the assignments will have you click on the turn in button to let me know you have completed it. There will be other times where a student will need to submit a picture, video, google form or short write up.

This year we will be outside more often then we have been in the past. So students need to be prepared with warm clothing for the colder months, water bottles, safe footwear (sneaker that cover their entire foot and stay on) and mask.

Throughout the year please check out the "Games to play at home" tab on my home screen. This is where you can access other activities to do when students are at home.

👍 I can't wait to play and learn with you.👍

Sidewalk Chalk Course

With the warmer weather finally here I am sure lots of our Ospreys will be getting outside and playing. I saw a great video where another PE teacher combined sidewalk chalk and exercising. Using sidewalk chalk they drew a path to follow that had different exercises to do at different stopping points. My daughter and I decided to try this out ourselves. The only thing we did differently was that we focused our path or course on hopping and walking.

My oldest thought it would be great to try and do the course on her bike.

Chicken Hopscotch

My daughter and I were playing hopscotch the other day when my youngest threw a pretend chicken at us and it landed on one of the boxes. My oldest hopped out to get it and hopped back. She said we should start tossing the chicken and then hop out to it and bring it back. So we did this for a little while. Then I thought about one of her PE teachers lesson for the week. In his lesson he added a fitness consequence to his throwing game. When he missed a throw he would have to do jumping jacks. I decided to use that same idea and add it to our game. You will in the video that Avery would get three tosses. If the chicken landed in a box. She would hop out and hop back. We also added numbers to our boxes. If the number in the box was 5 I would have to do 5 jumping jacks. I could do them either right away or wait until she was done tossing. If I choose to wait I have make sure to add up the points and do the same number of jacks to her points. For example: if the chicken landed in 5, 7, and 2. I would have to do 14 total jumping jacks. If the chicken doesn't land in a box that would be zero. You can do any exercise push ups, lounges, sit ups, squats, laps around the house or burpees.
We hope you like this game.
